Circles, Dots, & Doodles

Circles, Dots, & Doodles
Finding photos

I’m not much of a drinker, but I love these photos. Aren’t the colors and textures great?

Cutting out circles

I trace circles on the photos using drinking glasses and cut them out.

Gluing circles

Then I glue the circles into my journal.

Punching out dots

Next, I punch out two sizes of dots.

Gluing dots

I glue the dots onto the edges of the shapes, using the bigger ones on the smaller circle and vice versa.

Adding connecting lines

I like what I’ve created so far. But the circles are floating by themselves. I add some lines to tie them together.

Adding more lines

Then I draw wavy lines that anchor the circles to the page.

Adding doodles

Next, I doodle a pattern of lines and circles to the connectors.

adding more doodles

I draw some alternating half circles on the wavy lines.

Even more doodles

Then I use short lines to fill them in. Doesn’t it look like a twisting ribbon?

Adding white dots

I like the design so far, but it needs a bit of sparkle. I add some white dots, which help your eye move around the composition.

Birds Art Journal Spread

Birds Art Journal Spread

I got some free magazines for filling out an online survey. One of them was Birds and Blooms. All the great photos of birds inspired me to create an art journal spread.

Glued bird shapes

I cut out an assortment of birds, flipped them over, and glued them in my art journal.

Adding a top and bottom border

Then I used my sepia brush pen to create a curvy top and bottom border.

Adding doodles

Next, I use a white pen to add some doodled lines on the border.

Embellishing the doodles

I added some lines to the doodles to make them stand out a little more.

Adding dotted lines around birds

Then I drew dotted lines around all the bird shapes.

Finished Birds Art Journal Spread

To finish the spread, I added white dotted lines to the border areas. I also made the sepia dots larger.

Whimsical Collage & Doodles in my Art Journal

Whimsical Collage & Doodles in my Art Journal

I found a magazine photo that was filled with great patterns and colors. I decided to use it in an art journal page.

Preparing the collage paper

First, I cut the photo into strips. I punched holes in 4 of the pieces (and used the circles in another art journal spread. I also cut out wavy strips.

Gluing the first strips of paper

I glued the punched strips in a wonky rectangle shape.

Adding more strips of paper

Then I added the wavy strips of paper.

Adding doodles

Next, I started doodling on the inside of the composition. I’ve started using sanguine and sepia Pitt Artist Pens instead of black, this is sanguine. I like how they coordinate with the colors I tend to use. (These are affiliate links. This means that if you click on the link and buy certain items, I will receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you) to help keep the lights on in the studio).

Coloring in shapes in the doodles

I colored in alternating shapes in the doodles.

Adding embellishments to the doodles

Then I added little circles on the points of the diamond shapes.

Repeating the doodle pattern on rest of page.

To finish the design, I drew the same doodle pattern on the outside of the composition using a sepia pen. Then I added some tiny circles to the connecting lines.

Introducing My Art Cards

A number of years ago I decided I needed a quick and easy way to add creativity to my days. I came up with making a daily art card. Using 3 X 5 index cards I worked on them for about 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes before I went to bed. I called it bookmarking my day with my passion.

Sometimes I doodles with markers.

On other days I made collages with magazine pages.

I doodles over collages made with my own hand painted papers.

I even doodled on one some of my own photographs.

Follow me on Instagram where I’ll be posting one of my art cards on my stories every Saturday.

Serendipity in my Art Journal

Serendipity in my Art Journal

I found a photo in a magazine that had lots of detail, textures, and colors. I started cutting it into wavy strips and set up a photo shoot.

Finding a photo and cutting it into strips

And, oooh, I like how the strips look lined up below the top of the photo. I decide to use that arrangement as the base of the art journal spread. Before I started this spread, I had no idea what it would look like. I love the serendipity of liking the way I randomly arranged the papers for the photo shoot.

Gluing the photo and the strips onto the spread

Here they all glued down.

Adding doodles

Then I started adding doodles.

The completed serendipity art journal spread.

Because the photo is so detailed, I kept the doodles simple. I love the finished spread and am glad that I took advantage of the serendipity of using the random arrangement I made for the photo shoot.
