I’ve posted before about how I like to use magazines in my art journal spreads. For this spread I found a photo in a photography magazine that I loved.

I tore the photo to add some texture to the photo. Then I glued it onto the upper left part of an art journal spread.

Next I continued the outlines of the tree shapes up onto the page.

Then I filled in the shapes with black.

Then I doodled a grid in the bottom right of the spread that overlapped the photo. I used a black pen over the white paper, and a white one over the photo.

I added circles the grid in a checkerboard pattern.

Then I doodled some wavy lines from the circles to the corners of the squares.

Next I started creating a checkerboard pattern. At this point I was not happy with how it was looking. I decided to keep going but make the black areas thinner.

I am mostly satisfied with the completed spread. But I still don’t like the thicker areas of black in the top part of the checkerboard. I am glad that I persevered. I completed the spread and learned more about design and balance.
