I love to create my own decorated papers to use in my designs and collages. One method I like to use also has the advantage of recycling magazine pages. You could also use junk mail or catalog pages.

I start by covering the magazine pages with gesso, using haphazard brush strokes to create texture.Gesso on Magazine Pages

Then I brush on acrylic ink, again using haphazard brush strokes.

Next, I bring out my gel plate, acrylic paint and tools, including brayers, texture plates, and graining tools.

The final step is to pull the print and let it dry.

Because I love books and I love making art, my bookcase is filled with books about making art. Every now and then I like to choose a project to make from one of these books.

For this collage, I combined two projects from Collage Journeys by Jane Davies: Doodle Collage and Paint Playground.

I decorated papers with doodles, paint, and stencils.

I used those papers to create a collage in my art journal.

What I learned: New ways to create papers for use in collages & mixed media

What I like best: The contrast between the brightly colored and the black & white papers

Introducing Art Cards

My art cards are my mixed media playground. I use 3 1/2 by 5 index cards and store them in an old wooden box. The small size makes them quick to complete and easy to fit it among all my other daily tasks. Some days I only make 1, other days I might make up to 6.

Using Photos as Inspiration

One day as I walked through the city, this pattern on the sidewalk caught my attention. I snapped a picture.

Later, this image became the inspiration for the following collage.

I’ve Been Busy Making Holiday Designs

For someone who can be a bit of Scrooge around the holidays, I had a lot of fun creating these designs. I thought you might like to see the steps of my process.

1.Painted paper with gold & silver high flow acrylics.

Gold & Silver Paint

2. Used my gel plate with acrylic paint and texture plates to add colors over the gold & silver paint. I chose red, green, purple, and turquoise.

3. Cut up the papers.

4. Made collages.

5. Laid out the text & graphics on the computer and placed the scanned papers and collages into the shapes.

6. Made repeating patterns from the graphics & design elements.
